Mid Kent College Powers Up Their Net Zero Vision with Solspan

Mid Kent College is one of the South East’s leading further education providers, known not just for academic excellence but for its proactive commitment to sustainability. As part of the College’s ZERO initiative - a bold plan to achieve net zero carbon emissions - the leadership team has turned to practical, future-proof energy solutions to reduce its carbon footprint.

This includes:

  • Electrification of on-campus operations, including the installation of renewable electricity-powered heat pumps and new energy efficient hot water systems 
  • 100% renewable electricity sourcing with the installation of a large rooftop solar array and a vertical solar facade to generate renewable energy, along with battery storage and Solspan Gradasol solar carports.

With high on-site electricity usage and large open car park areas, the college saw solar carports as a smart, visible step toward energy independence.

The first step in delivering the solar carport system involved careful planning, civil works, and post installation. Solspan worked closely with the college and its partners HI Group and CBRE to ensure minimal disruption to the college's operations.

Once the posts were in place, the structure of the carport canopy began to take shape. This phase involved the lifting and installation of the structural steel beams and purlins, which form the backbone of the canopy.

Installation highlights: 

  • Hot-dip galvanised steel frame for long-term durability

  • Pre-fabricated modular components to reduce installation time

  • MEWPs and telehandlers used for safe overhead work

  • On-site adjustments for precision alignment

The final phase brought the solar energy system to life. High-efficiency solar PV panels which also heat water were mounted directly to the canopy roof structure, supported by a waterproof subroof and integrated drainage system.

Once completed, Mid Kent College will be able to generate clean, on-site electricity while providing shade and shelter for vehicles. The system will reduce carbon emissions, lower electricity costs, and serve as a living learning tool for sustainability-focused students.

Project Outcomes

The solar carport installation will cover 123 parking spaces and has an output  of 303 kWp, which is expected to generate around 310,000 kWh of renewable electricity per year.
